Today Kevin Patience and I went to play with Roger Tanner's stationary steam engines. There's a Ruston which is not yet operational and a Ransomes which we steamed for the first time today. The boiler (which was inspected last week) was fine, but first time round we couldn't get the steam into the piston. We let the fire die and released the steam pressure then dismantled various parts of it until we found that the problem was the speed governor, which we fixed, and then fired her up again. This time the big fly wheel turned merrily. However we also discovered that the water pump wasn't working so we had to shut her down again before the water level in the boiler dropped too low. We dismantled the pump and realised that it needs some work and probably some spare parts. But all in all a very successful and very enjoyable day.
