The Libyan state news agency Jana confirms that the China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) has commenced work on the country’s first railway since 1965 – a 453km, 1,435mm gauge line along the Mediterranean coast from the capital Tripoli to Surt, home town of Muammar Gaddafi. Libya is one of China's largest trading partners in Africa, Reuters reports, with two-way trade estimated by Libyan officials at more than $US2 billion during 2007.
