GMAM 4079 Maglies 15/02/09

Post by Aidan McCarthy »

Shots of GMAM 4079 blasting out of Magliesburg and coasting through Tarlton. Unfortunately the overcast weather not the greatest for photography.

Thanks, Aidan. Great pictures of a great machine, regardless of the weather.

These pics are a step back in time, when that line was the home of the GMAM garratts. Lovely photos!

They got her up and running! when I was there she was in the shed with her fusible plugs (?) being redone and I had to leave before they started firing her up. But I am glad I made the trip out to Germiston because she is a very very impressive machine from close up.

Nice picture, Derek. Nathan and I both had the chance to fire her a few times when she was running with Rovos Rail a couple of years back, and she is indeed an impressive machine - especially from the footplate!

John,

I too have had a chance to fire 4079, while leased by Rovos Rail from Sandstone Estates, during the Christmas and New Year period of 2006!

What an incredible machine . . . ? Hauling 21 coaches up Fountains valley to Centurion, together with one of Rovos's retired 19D's, an experience I will never forget!

To Aidan & Derek, thank you for sharing your pictures. Nothing wrong with the weather Aidan. In my opinion a typical Highveld summer steam scene should never be short of typical towering thunderstorm clouds in the sky back-ground!

Makes photography, that much more challenging.
