A heap of electric units came past and I managed a quick pic of one of them and saw it had odd markings "E1735" with NT underneath it and NATCOR under that with One under that... can anybody please enlighten me as to what those markings all mean?
E1735 Nt Natcor 1.

I saw an 18E with the same markings at Beaconsfield in 2007. I'm not sure, but it may be an abbreviation of Natal Corridor, as I believe locos with this mark usually travelled in the general Durban-Gauteng area.

You are right Jez. Natcor stands for Natal Corridor. Its the freight line between Joburg and Durban. Some of these Loco's wonder far and wide. I captured this one at Worcester in June 2006.
