CAIRO METRO TO EXTEND

Posted on 18 June 2009 by Railways Africa Editor

Cairo’s metro Line 3 is to be extended 6.2km eastwards underground from Abbasiya to Al Ahram, with four stations. in terms of a turnkey contract negotiated by a consortium headed by French construction company Vinci. Other members are Arab Contractors, Bouygues and local company Orascom. Completion is targeted for 2013. Rolling stock is to come from Mitsubishi, while Colas Rail and Alstom Equipment are among firms supplying signalling.

Funding includes a 17-year loan at 0.15% from the French government, as well as deals with the French Development Agency, the Egyptian government and Japan.

Vinci is currently working on the five-station, 4.3km first phase of Cairo’s Line 3, due to open in October 2011
