The Union of African Railways (UAR) is set to work out modalities on how to link all railway corridors in the continent.

This is contained in a statement signed by Mr David Ndakotsu, Assistant Director, Public Relations of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), yesterday in Lagos.

It said that railway experts in Africa are expected to converge at the NRC's headquarters in Lagos for the 6th Working Group Meeting on material and equipment in Africa from Oct. 25 to Oct. 26.

The union, according to the statement, is mandated to examine problems of railway infrastructure in Africa with the ultimate objective of linking all railway corridors within the continent.

The statement added that the union was also to work out strategies for the standardisation of the railway and advise policy makers on current development in the African Railway system. The working group meeting relates with the New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD) to device ways of using rail transport to improve growth and development in Africa.

This is especially in the area of mass transportation of people and goods in the sub-regions of Africa, it added. About 11 delegates from South Africa, the Cameroon, Gabon, Libya, Sudan, Cote D'Ivoire, Egypt, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo and Nigeria are expected to attend the meeting.
