To me it look as if a lot of clips on the right hand rail has given way and caused a derailment with the wheels slipping off the left hand rail

Derek, you are quite right - an accident waiting to happen!

Very observant you both!

The term that I'm probably looking for was and if I'm correct is; Rail-head flange wear.

This is caused by the flanges of trains running "hard-up" against the rail-head, when taking a moderate curve/s at speed. The wear in the second photograph is about ¾" wide, by almost 1" deep. Now, I would like to learn from the "experts", - and that is how much more flange wear can occur on the rail-head, before either it is deemed unsafe or as Derek rightly points out - "an accident waiting to happen!"??

What surprises me the most is that this line is probably only 10 or so years old, and by the number of missing or broken "rail-clips", why TFR has not yet done anything about doing repairs to this particular section of line. Not even temporary speed restrictions are in place, as I witnessed a diesel frieght power around this curve, well in excess of 65km/h.
This particular section of line is also littered with spun wheel marks, and to a lesser degree on the same section of the line, the rail-head has burred over where wheels have spun is a stationary position!

One wonders sometimes, how safe is our National network really?

Gabor,

If this is the line to Magalies then Reefsteamers needs to know about it, they run passenger trains on that line and its downright shocking that this has been allowed to continue, I am sure damage like that doesnt happen overnight. Can you please PM me the location so that I can pass it on to RS.
Not quite on the rails.
