Metro on the Springs-Nigel line

Post by James Attwell »

Certainly odd to see this on the Nigel line. This is the only service left on the line, after Nigel, most of the tracks and catinery have been stolen. There are quite a lot of trucks still at Nigel but most will not move easily again. The train is usually 3 coaches long.

Why is it odd? I'm sure this corridor carries passengers 7 days a week. Lovely photo btw!!

Nice clean set and I like the semaphores :)

Why does this line carry so little passengers?

I didn't realise this line still had semaphores...until we went past on our way to Natal and saw semaphores at both ends of Nigel and along the line. So time to do some phots again here....brings me back to the days of photting the daily goods out of Nigel which was always a heavy train. I even got a footplate ride one Saturday morning on the 15F back to Springs. The water tank is still there at Nigel, and the suburban service still runs. Between Nigel and Kaydale the line appears closed with catenary as well as some masts gone. Does anyone know when this happened?

If I remember, I think they said the line closed 1 - 2 years ago?

Chris Liesel and I are planning to do a photographic weekend Sometime in late August early September on this line, as well as the line south of Vereeninging to Kroonstad, to get as many semaphore pics with trains! Would you like to join! Anybody else?

Nice picture there Jamsie!
