George coaling station - Comparison between 1995 and 2009

Post by Andreas Umnus »

I found today an interesting picture taken in 1995 and a picture I took almost from the same place when I was there this year.
Because I had no luck with the staem train this year (he drove the next day), I walked a little bit around and was surprised in a way I don't like. How much the scenery there has changed in all these years.
The old depot in George looks like as if there is no service anymore. But to show the big change which has happens there, I think these two pictures are the best way.

Picture 1 was taken in 1995 and the coaling station is very busy with all the tippers with coal on the coaling station from where the locos get their coal when they are below the bridge. The ballustrade has two rows. A steam engine (Maybe No. 2760?? - Sorry I can't read the number of the engine) is shunting with some empty waggons on the track under the coaling station.

Picture 2 is from this year and we can recognize the big changes. There are no more tippers with coal on the coaling station. The ballustrade has only one row. The track, the steam engine and waggons are gone and the grass has regained the area where once lain the track.

I hope this is an interesting comparison.

Very sad. Done away with and replaced with a non-authentic mechanical plant. Just another example of heritage being preserved..
