Iron Ore line part 2

Post by Aidan McCarthy »

It is not really possible to show the length of over 3 kilometres in a photograph you have to see it to believe it. Spoke to the driver at the crossing and he said they are now hauling around 44,000 tons in a loaded train. Not bad for a narrow gauge railway

Hi Aidan, question, while chasing the train did you travel on that gravel road in these pics? I looked on google earth and it seems this road is following the line for quite a distance, havent checked the whole length though. Is the public allowed on that road as it looks like a service road for the line. Reason why I ask is Im planning a visit up there in the near future and would like to use this road for chasing.

Fanie I believe that this road is the countries only gravel toll road. How true this. I am not sure.

Hi Fanie,

We went from the marshalling yard at Saldanha and turned right in Velddrif once crossing the berg river. I think the road was sign posted to Piketberg. You then turn off at the sign to loop 1, big sign saying private road but there are no gates and nobody stopped us. If you follow this very good dirt road it will take you all the way to Elands bay. It is a toll road beyond there, we turned around Elands bay as we did not have time to go further.

Cheers

Aidan
