Old school, faded glory and new faces...

Photos of Southern African Electric Motive Power! Photos should be 800x600 pixels, maximum size 130K. Very good ones will be moved to the Online Gallery, the rest will be pruned away after 14 days to conserve space. Sign of the times. A faded Spoornet emblem on the side of a class 5E1 electric now the property of Rovos Rail. The once familiar orange colour scheme was an attempt at modernising the old red and grey schemes of the old railway system. Soon this unit will proudly bear the Rovos green

Past glories. The familiar colours of the old South African Railways still look good on these class 5E1 locomotives now private property of Rovos Rail

How sad to see the old paint fade to undercoat on a once proud electric unit. However, this drab mix will soon bear the green corporate colours of Rovos Rail, who have purchased 9 of these last series 5E1 Units. Seen here at their depot in Capital Park

A range of colour schems tell the history of the rail system and the fate of the old class 5E1 electric locomotives. From the original Gulf red of SAR days, to the orange with blue and white striping similar to the old Republic flag, we go to the plain orange colour and finally the corporate colours of Rovos Rail. This green is similar to the original colour schemes of the electric in the early days. These electrics are now under the ownership of Rovos and will be used on the main line. The steam will only do the short runs to Centurion and Panpoort.

The old drop pit shed at Capital Park once had many steam locomotives in various stages of having wheels dropped to major repairs done under this very same roof. Today, the new face of the Rovos future, in the form of ex-SAR class 5E1 units, take their place. Only the wheel sets of their steam fleet bring some sense of meaning to this once busy steam operation.
