How do they get so dirty up by the headlight area?

When they are running in multiples the grease from the Pantograph sprays all over the Loco behimd. During rain its even worse.

Why is it that in the past we never saw this? I never saw a loco with a dirty front like that when I worked for the Spories. Didnt they use grease on the panto's in the past? I would still like to know how you get grease on a panto in the first place.

They washed the Loco's regularly. In the past you never saw a dirty Loco. They looked like they were polished. Have a look at Andreas's photos of the 5E's he sent in a while ago. I enclose a photo from Andre Kritzinger that comes from an old Spoornet Calender. Here in the Western Cape the loco's are in a shocking state. I wonder how long the newly painted purple Shos colurs will last.
