Powder River Combo - Pentrex

Post by Kevin Wilson-Smith »

For fans of American engines and railways, this DVD provides three hours of railroading in the Powder River Valley.

Made up of two original DVDs - King Coal - Powder River Rails & Mines (filmed in 2001) and Powder River Basin Coal Trains (filmed in 1992), it provides an in-depth look at coal trains in the Wyoming Powder River Basin. Here, the majority of the United States coal is mined, with theactual figures of coal involved being quite staggering.

The country itself is fairly dry and arid, and what is of interest is the fact that often after the coal mining the countryside after rehabilitation is often better than it was prior. Proved by all the buck running around!

The viewer is provided with lots of nice shots of Union Pacific and BNSF trains running with high power units, and long long coal trains! Presented nicely. the various coal trains hold the viewers interest and never become boring - a major achievement for this type of topic!

However, the video's interest is increased by the fact that it does not only include runby s and meets, but in typical Pentrex fashion also goes into the hows and whys of coal mining, taking the viewer to Black Thunder mine to see how it is done. An overview of how the coal is dug up, hauled and flood loaded into moving trains is then given. The flood loading process is interesting and is explained in detail, but given the numbers of wagons loaded every day, this must surely qualify as one of the most boring jobs in the world anywhere! Shudder!

Highly recommended!
