NGG13 78 at Estcourt, June 1977

Post by Steve Appleton »

Posted on behalf of the photographer, Dennis Mitchell:
Just a couple from Estcourt in 1977.
1. This is the shunt loco (12A 2139?), waiting for NGG13 No 78 to come from loco and attach to its mixed to Weenen.
2. NGG13 No 78 waiting to depart Estcourt for Weenen with the daily mixed. June 1977. No 78 was Driver Billy Betser's favourite loco, and one of only 3 "13s" still running at this stage. Nos 49 and 59 being the others. No 59 was standby loco at Weenen and 49 was at Port Shepstone.
We, after cab rides and some cadging, all ended up at the Besters for afternoon tea!! Great South African hospitality!!
