For those who haven't heard of them, brake tenders were used in the early years when diesel replaced steam in the UK and many of the goods trains were still unfitted (ie they had no continuous vacuum or air brake). The diesels were lighter than the steam locomotives which they replaced and needed extra braking power, hence they ran with brake tenders.
