NIGERIAN PRESIDENT INAUGURATES LOCOS

Railways Africa on March 29, 2011 in Nigeria

On 12 March, Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan commissioned the newly acquired locomotives of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) in Lagos. He was quoted saying: “Today is a unique and important day, because we know the importance of rail transport to the economy of any nation. I am highly honoured and pleased to commission the newly acquired locomotive engines”.

The President took a 98km train ride from the NRC headquarters at Ebute Metta, Lagos, to Abeokuta in Ogun.

In 2009, the federal government approved expenditure of N27 billion for the rehabilitation and purchase of railway equipment, including 25 locomotives from General Electric of the USA. These arrived between February and September 2010.
