Kenya: RVR to clear "safety corridor"

RVR is planning to clear a "safety corridor" alongside the tracks through shanty towns such as Kibera. Dwellings and kiosks have encroached right up to the trackside, posing a real danger to people, property and the train. Rubbish on the tracks also causes wheel slip, with some trains needing to be banked through Kibera. When we took 3020 on the steam safari positioning move to Naivasha in May, we hit a hand cart which was too close to the tracks in Kibera. Our driver didn't stop, and when we discussed it with one of the railway police who was riding on the train with us, his response was, "Don't worry, it happens all the time".
