1970s SA steam on 8mm film

Post by Ted Polet »

Being quite new to this forum, I thought it might be a good idea to post a few links to my 1970s films which I published some time ago. I sailed in cargo ships during the 1970s and visited South Africa twice, once in 1974 and once in 1976. The 8mm film was shot in 1976. Except for a few short sequences at Port Elizabeth, where I had a cassette recorder with me, the sound was assembled, timed and dubbed in from other sources, so it isn't authentic.

I made a short film of the Table Bay yard at Cape Town, which features S2, 14CR and 19C class locomotives. The 19C is 2439, as far as I know the last one overhauled, I think at Salt River works. It is only shown resting between jobs, but in steam. The film shows two convoys of locomotives at the end of shift, returning to Salt River.

The second film shows steam operations at Port Elizabeth and East London. At P.E. I filmed 12R no. 1506 shunting the harbour sidings. This has original sound dubbed in. At East London I rode the shed pilot which was 14CR no. 2028. Finally some regrettably dim views of 14CRs climbing the grade on the southwest side of the Buffalo River.

The third film shows a trip on the Avontuur narrow gauge line from Humewood Road to Loerie and back, with NG118 climbing Loerie bank in great style. The sound in this case was dubbed in from a friend's VHS tape made 15 years later.

Regrettably the films are only a few minutes each - the 8mm material was very expensive in those days.

I hope you will enjoy this.
