Coach Find - new movement - odd colours!

Photos of Southern African Coaches, Rolling Stock & Miscellaneous Moving Items! Photos should be 800x600 pixels, maximum size 130K. Very good ones will be moved to the Online Gallery, the rest will be pruned away after 14 days to conserve space. If you have photos of FOTR Engines and Stock, please post them in the FOTR Gallery in the Friends of the Rail Forum above.

Coach Find - new movement - odd colours!

Post by Kevin Wilson-Smith »

These have been moved to Langlaagte since last weekend. 6 coaches, hopper wagons (used for?) and the strange yellow wagon (too close to squatters to get to safely).

I don't see a lot of windows and doors on them!

Apparently they are for scrapping and that their condition is so poor that they cannot even be towed to Koedoespoort for scrapping. The bogeys and brake gear are damaged/stolen and they will be cut where they stand.

Does anyone know what the color scheme was/related to?

While we are on the topic of coach colors, a couple of weeks ago I saw a train in the mainline composed of a diesel motive unit and some ten coaches. The latter were all the same more of less in appearance and were an olive green in color. Not the ROVOS color, but a British Army or Vietnam olive green.

Coaches were in very good condition and had a crest in the centre of the sides of each coach. I chased hte train to try and get a better look and a photo, but did not succeed!

Any ideas?

They were hired out to a rail contractor for a while. Long since stored. Very poor condition.

John - the crested coaches - between Krugersdorp and Randfontein area...... A rake of around 8, matching.

Dylan - noted. I was intrigued by the colour. I have not looked inside the coaches, though the partitioning in place can still be seen for each of the compartments in the 3rd picture. The outsides of the coaches look good. I did not investigate more as the area is really dodgy..... Do you have any idea as to the other coaches I mentioned (green ones). I do not know why - I keep thinking of Govt coaches - do the latter exist?

Do we need a separate forum section (eventually, when there is enough material) on coaches?

Kevin, in the photo gallery I think we're covered OK by "South Africa - Miscellaneous Vehicles", but maybe you could create a similarly named sub-forum in the main part of the South Africa forum, right after "South Africa - Motive Power", for non-photo-related discussions on coaches and other rolling stock?

Developments at Langlaagte - interesting!

They are .... the fencing where these coaches are have been fixed. Some palisade fencing has been put up. A security guard has been out in place. The coaches remain and have been joined by another unit - maroon and lime green this time.

Any idea what the latter would be?

Still no sign of the cutting , although the coaches remain marked as such.

OK Dylan - here is a picture. Now, the bottom skin has been removed - this was maroon in colour.

See the next post.

IS the coach above being cut? Now it is stripped down it does not look terrible. As this site (where the other coaches shown above are also) palisade fencing is up, and electricity has been restored to the building. The silver shed on the right has also been constructed across a couple of sidings.

Rebuild?

The photo below does not look a scrap operation and neither do the latest wagon shots?
