Top photo: SAR Union-Garratt. It had the coal bunker and hind water bunker on the extended boiler frame, and therefore was not as successful as a normal Garratt.
Bottom photo: class GL Garratt. These had the power of three class 1E electric locomotives or two class 14 4-8-2 steamers. There was a proposal for a quadruplex 2-6-6-2+2-6-6-2 Garratt, but it didn't happen.
