Record year for main line specials

The Main Line Steam Locomotive Owners Association has released statistics for last year's main line steam programme - and in mileage terms, they are a record.

Excluding the timetabled Whitby services run by the North Yorkshire Moors Railway over NR metals, there were 414 steam-hauled passenger services, using 25 engines, covering 58,955 miles.

There were also just seven failures - or one every 9,074 miles. That makes steam statistically more reliable than 17 types of everyday main line diesel!
