I spent a few weeks in Perth and up and down the west coast when I was doing a speaking tour in Australia a few years back (early 2005, I think) and I travelled a bit on the suburban trains - very nice.
Perth also has a very nice model railway shop - Stanbridge's in Mount Lawley. I went there by train - it's only a few minutes walk from the station.

Since the buses, trains & ferries operate under one umbrella it quite easy to interchange from one mode to the other. Interestingly the trains ran at a higher frequency than they do in Sydney. One gripe I have is that the trains and most buses were dull.

The first 2 pictures were taken on the new Mandurah line at Murdoch station. This line runs in the middle of a freeway. What was interesting was that whilst I was waiting on the platform motorist were asking me if they could see if there had been any accidents, as there was a long tailback and traffic was at a standstill!
