Under pressure from the governments of Kenya and Uganda to increase freight movement out of the harbour at Mombasa, Rift Valley Railways (RVR) is to introduce longer trains within the near future. The company’s newly appointed managing director Kevin Whiteway told Shipping News that a train 800m long train would be able to haul 180 containers. "By introducing long trains we would be able to fully utilise available paths,†he was quoted saying, “We are optimistic that we would be able to achieve the 40% cargo off-take from the port by the end of five years."
