A class 15F (3042) stands outside the shed at Reefsteamers. In front of her are the remains of a once proud engine....

3042 used to be shedded at Leeuhof(Vereeniging). Have shots of her leaving shed on a misty summer's morning around 1988/9. Seem to remember a 23 class tender on her?

Re: Class 15F-3042
Indeed a 23 class tender. The 15F original tenders were much shorter. When the 23s began to be withdrawn from 1976 onwards many of their tenders were transferred to the 15Fs, being interchangeable. They allowed a much better water capacity and looked very good on the Fs. The 23s were withdrawn due to frame cracks, being built in Nazi Germany before the outbreak of war and being allocated substandard steel. The best steel was allocated to the military, most of which was untimately blown to smithereeens.
