Black 5 No. 44871 was today (March 9, a Tuesday) booked for one the fairly regular Footplate Experience programmes (working 6 round trips between Rawtenstall and Bury) on the East Lancs Railway, so with a beautiful sunny morning I made a short visit.

After observing the 10mph slack over the level crossing at Irwell Vale and heading downhill towards Ramsbottom and Bury (IMG_8746 and 8748), 44781 is seen side-on with Lumb viaduct (IMG_8750) on the Stubbins Jct - Helmshore - Haslingden - Accrington line behind (closed 1966) all on the first run.
