LNER Poster #7 Jolly Fisherman

Another poster by Frank Newbold. With another interesting story!

In the UK this is probably the most famous railway holiday poster.

The original poster was published in 1908 by the Great Northern Railway. It was painted by John Hassell and the idea was thought up by the Chief Passenger Agent. The artist was paid 12 pounds for the work, and for the time it was outstanding and attracted much interest - Victorian/Edwardian posters were up to then very factual and restrained.

Much admired, it was then redrawn many times - the version shown here is recognised as the "classic".

What is interesting is that the poster is still used today in a modern form to promote Skegness - a poster with a life of 102 years!
