The Police in Kamuli intercepted two lorries loaded with railway sleepers, estimated to weigh over two tonnes, following a tip-off from residents. The first vehicle, carrying more than 250 pieces of metal, was intercepted at Butabaala on the Kamuli-Jinja highway before dawn. The second truck, belonging to Medinah Fresh Foods in Kampala, was intercepted after it developed a mechanical problem on “muddy village roads”.

Police say that vandalising of the railway has been fuelled by a “high demand for raw materials by the mushrooming steel mills in the country”.
