“Within the next eight months, there will be great relief on roads when we link Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) with Embakasi and then the Nairobi city centre,” Kenyan transport permanent secretary Cyrus Njiru told reporters on 27 October. In a Sh800 million project, 2km of new railway are to be laid to Embakasi, to relieve congestion on the city’s road system, in particular Mombasa Road. According to Njiru, “This is part of the government’s traffic management policy.”

Additional passenger coaches are to be acquired. Njiru said that 19,000 commuters are carried into Nairobi daily on 41 carriages. “Other lines earmarked for passenger coaches include that to Ruiru, Dagoretti and Ongata Rongai”.
