ZIM CONSIDERED STANDARD GAUGE

By railwaysafricaeditor / December 3, 2010 / Zimbabwe

Charles Rickwood comments: “Looking through some board minutes (1900 and 1901) of Rhodesia Railways Ltd it was interesting to read about the extension of the railway from Bulawayo to Wankie. To quote from the minute…’Board further considered the question of breaking the gauge and of starting a 4ft 8½ inch gauge from Bulawayo northwards.’ The contractor (Paulings) had quoted £800 per mile for Cape gauge and an extra £100 per mile if the line were to be standard gauge. Common sense prevailed and the extension proceeded with Cape gauge. So the recent flurry of standard gauge proposed projects in RSA and other African countries is nothing new!!!”

Well if they cannot pay staff and purchase any new locos, then how will they afford std gauge?
