Went out for an afternoon (Thursday 21 April 2011) in the Dales calling in at Austwick for lunch. After lunch we briefly called in at Settle station to get a photo of Colas 66845 on the Carlisle - Chirk timber train. We returned via Wray and Caton (where we used to live) and then to Lancaster (where I used to work).
Amazingly our visit to Lancaster seemed to coincide with the appearance of Royal Scot No. 46115 Scots Guardsman hauling the 200-mile Glasgow - Preston section of the 10-day Great Britain IV tour! Whilst waiting, every train through Lancaster was being cautioned to observe a 20 mph slack over the Lune viaduct due to some track defect as was Fastline 66301 on a northbound container train. Nevertheless, we had hopes that the steam train would have to accelerate hard through the station to climb the 1 in 98 grade.
Imagine everyone's great surprise when the train came over the bridge and through the station going flat out at 70mph+. Clearly someone had forgot to inform the driver of the slack. Fortunately there seemed to be no injuries other than to photographers fingers rapidly trying to adjust the shutter speed to freeze a fast moving train!
