On 19 October, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) restarted train operations from the Apapa station. The passenger turnout was “very impressive,” NRC Public Relations Officer Segun Esan told the Daily Champion, with the first train carrying over 2,000 passengers from Apapa to Ijoko in Ogun state.

Railway District Manager (Lagos) John Dottie told the paper that the mass transit services carry over 9,000 passengers daily. Train frequency has been increased to three times daily from Ijoko in Ogun state to Ebute-Metta in Lagos. Current plans envisage a train every hour.

Dottie added: “With support from federal government and our management, we have introduced business class on these trains, using air-conditioned coaches with inbuilt television sets. These have been well patronised.”

The Daily Champion quotes Dottie saying that NRC makes over N1 million every day on the passenger trains. However, he explains “Where we can make good money is the freight trains. We are just waiting for rehabilitation work to be completed on the track for us to start running freight trains. Four Mills have written to us because we used to carry goods for them to Kano and Maiduguri and we also carry for Dangote”.
