Sudan-Chad line

Post by John Ashworth »

From The Railway Magazine, November 2011, p98
Sudan-Chad line

Sudan, Chad and the Export Import Bank of China plan to sign an agreement to secure funds for a USD 2bn rail corridor linking Sudan and Chad.

The line will connect Chad's capital city of N'Damena [sic] to Nyala in West Sudan where it will link up to the existing railway to Sudan's capital Khartoum and the Red Sea's Port Sudan.

The rail corridor will allow trains to run at 120 km/hr, transporting goods directly from landlocked Chad to the Red Sea.
The article neglects to mention that Nyala is in war torn Darfur, nor does it explain whether the entire Sudanese rail network is going to be upgraded to allow trains to travel at 120 km/hr instead of the current 120 km/day (on a good day!).
