Welcome aboard Friends of the Rail

You've boarded one of our 60-year-old railway coaches at our private Hermanstad Station and settled into your seat, knowing that your car is safe and being looked after by our staff. One of our vintage steam locomotives has chuffed-up and coupled onto the train. The guard has waved his flag, the loco whistle has blown and we're off!

You sit back and completely relax as the city slips effortlessly by, accompanied by the smells and sounds of the steam loco up-front. The coach wheels beneath rap gently over the rail joints -- clack-clack, clack-clack. You cannot help but enjoy train travel in the relaxed way it used to be. You sip hot coffee or cool refreshments from the on-board kiosk and answer your children's many excited questions. You do not have to keep your eyes on the road. You point out the many familiar sights: the Union Buildings, Loftus stadium, UNISA, Gautrain, the 1910 Pretoria station building, etc, all from a different angle. Before you know it, we are back at Hermanstad station and you didn't even have to drive. That wasn't simply train-travel that you've just experienced, that was time-travel as well! Indeed, with us you really do travel back in time. And...   you do not have to dream it!

On this website you will find details of various FOTR steam train excursions to Cullinan and our "Tshwane Xplorer" shorter trips around our beautiful capital city. Our trips are very popular. They fill up fast. Book now for a great day out that you, your children and your friends will remember for a long time to come. Come along with us and in so doing, help us to preserve South Africa's unique railway heritage.

About FOTR

guard_vs

We are proud to be Tshwane-Pretoria and the nation's premier steam heritage railway club. We have been looking after our capital city's heritage steam locos and running steam train excursions for  25 years and hope to continue well past another 25. Your support is vital and appreciated. As a non-profit recreational club run by volunteers, we rely almost entirely on the surplus revenue generated by our train trips to play our part in keeping the South Africa's proud and unique railway heritage alive and to continue to provide a "living musuem" for all our people to experience and enjoy now and into the future. We are preserving South Africa's railway heritage not just for our generation, but also for our children's generation and for their future children too!

27 April Train Cancelled

Email Print

We sincerely regret and apologise that we have been forced to cancel the train to Cullinan which was to run on 27th April. This is due to the theft, yet again, of track on the Cullinan branch line. This is absolutely beyond our control.

Our marketing people will be contacting booked passengers to advise them of their options (either a refund or a postponement to a later date). If you have not heard from them by Saturday 25th April, please call them on the numbers above for further information.

At this stage we believe that we will be able to run the trains on the 2nd and the 10th May.

Photographers' Weekend, 13th and 14th June 2015

Calling all photographers! FOTR is offering a special weekend of "in the depot" and "out on the line" live steam railway photographic sessions. Hosted by the skilled railway photgrapher, David Benn FPSSA, this will be a not-to-be-missed event!

This event will be limited to just 50 participants to allow close tuition and ease of access by all participants.

Download a brochure (PDF file, requires Adobe Reader)

This will be a fabulous opportunity to take some great photographs of our authentic, restored vintage steam train. We will provide specially posed settings in our depot as well as real live action shoots out on the rural Cullinan branch line. You will get the opportunity to take "mood" shots both by day and by night with the guidance and advice of experienced railway photographers.

Before dawn on Saturday morning 13th June we will meet up over coffee at FOTR's Capital Park Pretoria steam depot for sunrise and early morning photography of our locos, both posed and at work, shunting under the soft morning light. Later that morning the train will depart for Cullinan where we will take action shots out in the country-side as the train traverserses the sceneic Cullinan branch line. In the evening there will opportunities for sunset shots on the line and night shots by floodlight in the Cullinan station area.

First-light on Sunday morning will present yet more sunrise photo-opportunties out on the Cullinan branch line with false departures and arrivals. The morning is set aside for photographic run-pasts and posed shots. We will depart for Capital Park at about 15:00 on Sunday afternoon. Arrival home should be around 18:00.

The price is just R1750 per photographer, excluding accomodation and meals which can be arranged if required. We will be able to accomodate some photographers aboard the train (book please) or we can arrange more comfortable accomodation in one of the nearby Cullinan B+Bs or guest houses.

If booked in advance, spouses and non-photographers will be able to accompany photographers on the train to Cullinan and return at a lesser fare, but for safety reasons and to allow maximum opportunity for paying photographers, they will be required to keep well clear of the train and photographers and may not be permitted off-train access to the photoshoot locations.

The weekend is subject to a minimum number of photographic participants (40) and the necessary authorities being received from Transnet Freight Rail. FOTR reserves the right to cancel or postpone without giving advance notice if necessary. Safety will be paramount and all particpants will be required to attend a safety briefing and to complete and sign FOTR's safety indemnities before being permitted to take part.
