- A film shoot was carried out at Meerhof station on the banks of the Crocodile river at Hartebeespoort dam, in the early 1980's. The loco was based at Germiston and belonged to the railway museum. Local crews worked the train and it spent a few days on the branch traversing the steel bridge

That looks familiar...
and it also explains at least one mystery.

The one in Derek's photo is a NGR loco,I understand one of the oldest locos in SA.
I am quite keen on the small coach with one end balcony on the NZASM train. I have seen this train as a postcard which was sold by the Museum in JHB ages ago. No one could shed any light to the coach in question.
Any takers? What of the whole train, are they still around?
Thanks
Carlos

The coach looks like one of the Infectious Diseases coach, and judging by the withdrawal dates its 96 which was withdrawn from service in January 1985. If so it was built in Pretoria, entered traffic in 1929. Umgeni also had one of these, No. 97 which was written off by SATS in an accident, unfortunately I don't have the date of this. I suppose it could also be the one in the photo.
