TRAIN DRIVER RAPED AND MURDERED

The Railway Safety Regulator has learnt with serious concern of an inhuman act, where a female Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) train driver was raped, then murdered. It is reported that this "unthinkable" deed took place on Monday 4 June between 03H00am and 04H00am outside Makhado Station in Limpopo.

A train pulling out of the yard lost its vacuum (for brakes), realizing this, the driver contacted her assistant (also female) over the radio to find out what the cause could be. The assistant found no fault. It was at this point that both the driver and her assistant agreed to inspect the train from opposite directions to try and locate what the fault was. The driver never returned and was later found, raped and murdered.

The RSR urges all operators to provide sufficient security for their staff in line with their risk assessment profiles and in turn, the RSR will be investigating this incident.

We call on law enforcement agencies to redouble their efforts in bringing the culprit(s) to book.
