Winter tales

Post by Chris Janisch »

On greasy rails, coated with dew and condensed steam, the little 24 class gets her load moving upgrade. The driver grapples with the regulator as he attempts to control adhesion, while peering ahead through the clouds of icy steam. The exhaust sharpens as the wheels bite into the rails, and in a flashing blur of motion, rods and vapour the machine is past us. A final blast from her stack and then all is quiet, save for the whispers of condensed droplets falling all around us on the rails...

Smoke glows gold against the new days sun, steam and vapour blend as one. Soft and golden to behold. The locomotive holds its load. Esy on the slippery rails , white sand spilling like a snails trail. Wheels of steel they sopin around, and exhaust reverberates with a whoofling sound. Slip and slide and shake and rattle, soon the load is of with fine fettle. Driver notches up another one, and soon the smoke trails into the rising sun!!!!!!
Very nice. Evocative provocative vapeur!

Actually it's a lovely evocative word which sums up that noise. The possibilities of it are endless. "To whoofle", "whoofler", etc.
