9902 pulls up the far end of the station and waits for the Train Assistant to fill a kettle before departing - sorry I didn't get a photo of Joseph with his kettle as that's the universal lot of Train Assistants all over the world! These locos are only a couple of years old and are kept very clean.

The train then leaves RVR territory, which uses absolute block working with tokens (see picture of similar Kenyan train operating equipment at Athi River), onto the branch line controlled by the Magadi Soda Company, which uses radio-controlled permissive working.

Railwaymen tell me that RVR is installing some form of CTC between Nairobi and Kampala.
