On 21 October, Amtrak train 350, the Wolverine from Chicago to Pontiac in Michigan, ran into trouble about 3km east of Niles, Michigan. Spokesman Marc Magliari was quoted explaining that several coaches “lost contact with the tracks.†Nine people – seven passengers and two crew members – were taken to hospital. Only one stayed overnight. The other 167 passengers were conveyed to their destinations by bus. Normal service resumed on 22 October.
Officials were quoted saying investigations could take a year. At this stage all that has been disclosed is that “the train was switching tracksâ€.
