FOTR puts safety first and trains its members to a high standard. Training is done by Spoornet instructors to Spoornet's own standards, and we must pass Spoornet examinations. In 2006 Firemen John Ashworth and Gabor Kovacs qualified as Shedmen, allowing them to move locomotives within the confines of the depot. In 2007 Steve Smith, Steve Appleton, Dewald Heydendrech, Jonathan Cape and Nathan Berelowitz qualified as Guards.
On 29th July 2007 Spoornet instructor Cliff Avis presented certificates to some of the members.
