Ex SAR 24 no 3655 is currently the only active steam locomotive in the Cape Town area.
It is on lease to Atlantic Rail, which as you know, operates special day train trips from Monument station (Cape Town) to Simon's Town.
With the permission the respective photographers ...

Re: 14CRB 2010 in Ashton
One week later, on 23 February 2011, we again passed through Ashton.
Work on #2010 was now completed.
Presently this must be the neatest looking locomotive plinthed anywhere in South Africa in an open public space. I exclude the locomotives at Gold Reef City and Queens Casino, as these are ...

Re: 14CRB 2010 in Ashton
Passing through Ashton on 19 February 2011, we noted that the Langeberg Municipality was doing some restoration work on #2010. The paint job was nearly done, and on both sides of the water tender the worst rusted sections were cut out awaiting replacement strips to be welded in place.

Re: Loco at Kimberly mine museum
Hi Luca,
when I compare your picture with mine, it seems to be the same loco but the loco stands now at another place?
And a second one beneath the loco?
I can't remember that I saw two of them there.
Hi Andreas,
The mine display now shows two of the Bagnalls: A total of 4 Bagnall loco's were ...

Heidelberg Station Museum to re-open on Sat 28 Nov
I have just received this very positive news.
They need every bit of support - I hope that there will be enough regular visitors to justify this project.
FOLLOWING IS THE MESSAGE:

Re: SAR Stored/Operating Steam Loco list
Using my photos taken in Aug 2009, the list for Queenstown seems to be correct, with one more locomotive:
In addition to the listed:
"19D #3337"
there also is a
19D #3330 with tender no 2714.
As far as I can establish from the photos there are 19 engines "stored" on the site.

Re: SAR Stored/Operating Steam Loco list
re Luca's remark about Queenstown
There are still a couple of loco's in the Queenstown "grave yard" - about a dozen engines - all in very poor condition -- we visited there on 27 Aug 2009. I still have to work out which engine numbers are identifiable in in my photos.

Re: Wheel spin damage by E1331 OFS ???
Tom,
Yes, that is what I thought too ... we should not push too hard ... rather just be on the lookout.
However, this one is not necessarily a human problem, but may be a mechanical failure.

Re: Wheel spin damage by E1331 OFS ???
Kevin, I like the angle (no pun!!!) you are taking. I think it is a very valid point and certainly not easy to answer. One would like to see a picture of a complete bogie in the workshop.
From my understanding there is a 550kW motor on each axle (Paxton) and they (4 motors) work independently, so I ...
