Clovelly Station

Post by allanroy »

Clovelly Station has been closed for a very long time. I was told that it was closed due to the high cost of maintaining it due to damage from the sea as it sits on the rocks.

No idea why this building still has a roof on, but someone seems to be living there.

Hi Alan,

The reason it was closed was that there used to be a pedestrain bridge at the Fish Hoek end of the station used to get access to the sea side platform. For some reasion the bridge belonged to the municpality and not the railways, it was declared unsafe and the municpality refused to pay for the repairs so the bridge was demolished and the station closed as the railways did not want to pay for the repair of the bridge due to low number of passengers using the station.

Cheers
Aidan McCarthy

I noticed on my last visit to Cape town that no trains stopped there. As a kid (1955 to 1959)I used to fish form the platform until someone fell over the edge and we were banned from fishing

Itook the train form muizenberg to fish hoek and back. A friend told me that I was nuts to travel on the train.
Interestingly the train was still the old 1958 stock in a new colour.

Alan, That photo takes me back. The view I would get looking back at Fish Hoek on the eway home form a good swim!

I think I should try for another trip back to Cape town.
