Lend a Hand (LAH) Our next LAH will be held on Saturday 21 August & Sunday 22 August 2010, At Hermanstad Station or Capital Park which is behind ROVOS Rail.

Dress very casual. (A golf shirt and jeans or pants / overalls are more practical, if you happen to have them at home). No open sandals are permitted and sturdy shoes are required, preferably safety shoes. Hats, caps, and sun block are recommended.

Arrive at 8:30am and report to the Board Member or member approved by the Board in charge. Fill in the Red Log Book.
Free tea/coffee will be available and is self-service from the Kitchen.

For the Shed Braai at 12:00, Please bring your own meat and drinks. We will provide the braai, salad and rolls as well as paper cups, plates, cutlery etc.

There are still a few carry over projects like fitting of the soap dispensers in all the coach toilets from last time at Hermanstad Station. All tools and materials will have already been packed in the “task crates” in the office. Please return all tool/s and left over material/s and “task crate/s” to the office.

Please contact the Board Member or Member specifically approved by the board for this month, in charge before the date/dates you would like to lend a hand, for maps, catering, work update and any other information you may need.

To add to the already mentioned work schedule, the newly manufactured "Coach Scotch Boxes" (see second attached picture below)

1. drilled Coach Scotch Boxes for mounting screws,
2. paint 1 coat with an undercoat (red-oxide)
3. painted 2 coats cannery or bright yellow, and allowed to dry properly.
4. Fit to coaches, just above the vacuum brake pipe goose neck. (see first attached picture, as shown for positioning)
1 Coach Scotch Boxes per alternate side per coach, ie. 2 per coach.

Requirements
1. Self Tapping (metal) Stainless Steel M6 or M8 Screws (hardware store). Minimum Qty. 50
2. Stainless Steel washers for either M6 or M8 screw, dependent on what will be purchased. Minimum Qty. 100.

We will also need to check coaches for internal maintenance, and write these faults / problems into the coach book/s as provided by Liesel. These books are located in the office at Hermanstad.

Future project to be considered, is to fit a plastic wall-box to the interior of each coach, either into a side wood panel or onto the wood panel below a seat and sightly out of view, into which a 3 pin 220/240 volt -3 in plug socket is fitted. I suggest a "Pop-up Socket" or similar for safety reasons. See the following PDF Document from Crabtree Electrical's website. See page 2 of the PDF document - product code: 11901/AR1.

Once the socket/s is/are fitted, then wire to the existing 220/240 volt electrical system, which is fitted to almost all in use suburban stock.
This socket can be used to supply electrical power on the train, for cleaning, repairs, and other equipment purposes, except for HIGH Current (amps) appliances, ie. welding machines.

It is with regret, that I have to announce that I will not be available to lead or attend this up-coming Lend-A-Hand (LAH) weekend.
The current class for aspiring FotR and Rovos steam drivers, is rapidly coming to an end, and today during revision classes, Cliff Avis announced the final date for the Final Exam/s for Drivers.

With this being a rather more pressing issue for me and others, I am left with no option but to use next weekend purely for study purposes, and I would assume Nathan, Tony and Steve Smith would like to do something similar.

I would kindly request another EXCO member or active member, to offer their services for this event by no later than Wednesday, 18th August 2010 before 18H30, PLEASE, PLEASE kindly.

Please contact me directly, should you wish to attend and lead this LAH weekend, so arrangements can be concluded

Should no one respond to this call, then the next option will be to postpone this event to another suitable date in September.

Gabor, Tony Attwell, Steve Smith and Nathan are all in class on the final leg of steam drivers exams and so will not be able to assisit. However Les Weideman will be there on both days and if a board member can help out, say either of the Chrissses it will be great. Work has started stripping the 15F so that already has momentum and can be done.

Back to the Lend a Hand - if there is nobody to lead the work in Hermanstad, Nathan has suggested that all the volunteers can go to Capital Park and assist Les Weideman with stripping the 15F, as there is a lot of work to be done there and a group working together could make huge progress.
