The huge hulks of GL garrats at Stanger shed in the late 1960's. These were my first big locomotives I ever saw as a pimply faced train spotter!

Withdrawn class GL garratt at Greyville. Of interest is the cooling fan fitted to the rear of the cab. These locomotives worked in the heat of Kwa-Zulu Natal. The bent wire hook on the outer cab handrail bears testimony to many a canvas covered water bottle swinging in the breeze. The locomotive had a Duplex mechanical stoker which fed small coal nuggets via twin feeds into the firebox. 1969

Farewell to steam on the South Coast line was worked from Durban to Port Shepstone by two class GCA garratts. Pictured here and ready to depart from Durban is 2623. Number 2199 was sent ahead and waited as standby loco at Kelso. They double headed back. 1971.

Went through an old album and found this one of a massive GL garratt just coming off a train at Stanger on the Kwazulu-Natal north coast. This was number 2352 and I had opportunity to enter the cab for a while. I had never seen such a massive firebox. This photo taken around 1969.
