RIP Gilton

Post by John Ashworth »

We regret to announce that Gilton, one of the Rovos Rail trainee drivers who did the driver training course with the rest of our chaps, passed away at 5am this morning, Thursday 30th December 2010. He had been in hospital for some time after collapsing.

Gilton was a driver from Zimbabwe who came to South Africa and studied to recertifly himself first as a fireman and then a steam locomotive driver. He was dedicated and hardworking, and very popular with the FOTR crews with whom he worked. We will all miss him.

Nathan, Steve Smith and Cliff Avis were able to visit Gilton in hospital just two days ago. Nathan says, "It was heartbreaking. He speaks very softly, but am sure he was glad to see us. Cliff said a prayer for him."

Our condolences to his friends and family, and to Rovos Rail. RIP.

Gilton also did his firing qualification on FOTR trains and so I got to know him quite well. A mild-mannered and respectful man, he will be missed by all. He had the respect of the Rovos drivers too- and this is not easily earned.
Thanks Nathan and the crew for visiting him in hospital. He would have appreciated that immensely.
