Transnet Freight Rail’s drought relief trains

Brings back memories of the 1984 famine in western Sudan when Sudan Railways ran drought relief trains into Darfur. The light weight of the track west of Babanusa meant that loads were limited by the power of the diesels which met the axle-weight restrictions, so six steam locos were refurbished to haul trains over the last stretch. Sadly I never got to see one of them in operation (although I was in western Sudan for part of that time). I assume that TFR is not using steam locos for their current drought relief trains!
