American Civil War
In the US Civil War the North devastated the South. Richmond, Virginia, was the capitol of the South. Here's a photo of a Richmond & Petersburg engine. Note the vertical boiler. My guess is this engine was museum piece, even at that time.

Re: Remembering 1914 and 1944: Railways at War
The American Civil war lasted from 1861 to 1865. The North had the industrial might; the South was predominantly agrarian; and fought to secede from the union.

Re: American Civil War
Welcome to the forum, Philip. I have chatted to you on the Railroad.Net forum but it's good to see you on the FOTR Forum.
I've split this from the original topic so that people can see from the topic heading what it's about.

Re: American Civil War
"General Sherman's mandatory evacuation order led to this photograph of the last train leaving Atlanta. With overloaded cars, it will not have enough room for civilians to bring all of their belongings which can be seen littered beside the tracks beside the wagons they left behind and the 2 chests." This is another view of the Atlanta, Georgia, depot before it was destroyed.
