TRANSNET yesterday said it had reshuffled its senior executives, temporarily filling the top post at its largest division that had stayed vacant for almost two months.
Acting CEO Chris Wells said he had asked Tau Morwe, CE of Transnet Port Terminals, to take over as acting head of Transnet Freight Rail, pending the outcome of the disciplinary action facing Siyabonga Gama, the suspended CE of the rail division. The move suggests Transnet recognises that without a leader at Transnet Freight Rail, employee morale may suffer and customers could easily lose confidence in it.
Gama was suspended on September 1 and Transnet instituted the disciplinary process against him in August. He faces internal disciplinary action over allegations of irregularities relating to a security tender and a contract to buy 50 “like-new†locomotives. It is not clear yet when the disciplinary process will end.
Wells said the absence of a full- time CE was “not ideal for (Transnet Freight Rail) and its stakeholders, particularly the customersâ€.
